SNM's Image of the Year; news from ASCO and SIIM shows

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Conference season is in full swing, and there's no better place to keep up with the news than AuntMinnie.com.

First up is nuclear medicine's showcase conference, the Society of Nuclear Medicine's (SNM) annual meeting, which is under way in San Antonio. Features editor Wayne Forrest is in attendance and filing daily reports for our Molecular Imaging Digital Community, including yesterday's eagerly awaited announcement of the Image of the Year. Read about the image that won the top award by clicking here.

PET/MRI is generating the most buzz at the meeting, as evidenced by the conference's keynote address, in which Dr. Bruce Rosen, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital said that the hybrid modality must demonstrate its clinical value before achieving widespread adoption.

In addition, one of the first PET/MRI clinical studies, comparing the technology to PET/CT, was named as one of the top five research papers presented at the meeting. Learn more about the research by clicking here, or visit the Molecular Imaging Digital Community at molecular.auntminnie.com for more updates from San Antonio.

News from ASCO and SIIM shows

In addition to the SNM meeting, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) conferences just recently drew to a close.

From ASCO, check out an article on how breast brachytherapy use is rising among elderly women with breast cancer, at the expense of traditional radiotherapy. Another ASCO study found that screening for ovarian cancer with a technique that includes transvaginal ultrasound doesn't reduce death rates.

Finally, our reports from the SIIM show over the weekend included an article on how data derived from a PACS audit can help radiologists assess the timeliness of radiology reports, as well as a story on how radiologists can navigate the quixotic "meaningful use" requirements to win healthcare IT stimulus funding.

Next week, check back in our CT Digital Community for coverage of the International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) conference in San Francisco.
