The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation has awarded $1.5 million in National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) Distinguished Investigator grants to 15 recipients for research on brain and behavior disorders.
The NARSAD grant provides funding of up to $100,000 for a one-year study. The foundation this year received 170 applications for funding.
This year's grant recipients and their studies include the following:
Suzanne Haber, PhD, University of Rochester, will study animal models to shed light on the developmental process of white matter in prefrontal cortical areas of the brain through 3D images.
Dr. Ralph Hoffman, Yale University School of Medicine, will study schizophrenia, including areas such as difficulty with narrative language and delusions. The research plan includes functional MRI for patients with schizophrenia and normal controls, which could result in new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Christos Pantelis, University of Melbourne, will use PET to test whether inflammatory processes cause active gray matter brain changes at the start of illness in prepsychotic young people.
