The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) issued a statement on Monday saying that it is "aware of the labor dispute" at nuclear reactor design and service firm Candu Energy, and it does not anticipate safety issues at the country's nuclear facilities, such as the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor at Chalk River Laboratories.
The NRU is owned and operated by Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL), which supplies approximately half of the demand for the radioisotope molybdenum-99 in North America.
Approximately 800 nuclear scientists, engineers, and technologists at Candu Energy in Canada went on strike on June 9 over wages and seniority after negotiations failed to produce a settlement, according to a report by the Canadian Press.
SNC-Lavalin owns Candu Energy, which has operations in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Because Candu Energy does not operate any nuclear power plants, the strike should not affect day-to-day operations of those facilities.
