A researcher at the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine has received a $450,000 grant to advance work in the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
The funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health will go to Dr. Hossein Jadvar, PhD, an associate professor of radiology and biomedical engineering and the current president of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI).
The study will investigate the use of image-targeted biopsies through PET radiotracers that monitor cellular proliferation to determine if cancer can be found in the prostate gland, even if there is no clear evidence of cancer through biopsy, according to USC.
The ultimate goal is earlier detection of prostate cancer and more targeted, less-invasive treatment. Jadvar and colleagues plan to begin the study by the end of the year and enroll approximately 40 patients.
