The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador is getting its first PET/CT scanner.
Eastern Health in St. John's will be home to the system, and the site will also include a cyclotron. The hospital's new nuclear medicine and molecular facility was officially opened in an October 24 ceremony, according to a report by CBC News.
In addition to attracting patients, the cyclotron will attract "high-caliber" researchers and medical physicists as a way to benefit the province's scientific community, Dr. Peter Hollett, clinical chief of nuclear medicine for Eastern Health, said in the article.
The total cost of building the new nuclear and molecular facility and purchasing the new PET/CT scanner, cyclotron, and other equipment was slightly more than $46 million ($35.9 million U.S.), according to CBC News.
