Study: MRI identifies submucosal fibroids that may migrate into endometrium

Small submucosal fibroids are more likely to migrate into the endometrial cavity after uterine artery embolization (UAE), according to a new study published this month in the American Journal of Roentgenology (May 2008, Vol. 190:5, pp. 1220-1226).

Forty-nine patients with 140 fibroids had an MRI exam before and after UAE; 39 of these fibroids were submucosal, according to Dr. Sachit Verma of the department of radiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Of these 39, 33% moved to the endometrial cavity after UAE.

Verma and colleagues found that submucosal fibroids with an interface-dimension ratio (the ratio between the largest endometrial interface and the maximum dimension of the dominant submucosal fibroid) greater than 0.55 at the preprocedural MRI have a higher risk of becoming endocavitary following UAE.
