Univ. of Saskatchewan gets $1.6M neuroimaging grant

The federal government of Canada and the provincial government of Saskatchewan are investing $1.6 million Canadian ($1.83 U.S.) to the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine in Saskatoon for the purchase of neuroimaging equipment to promote research of Alzheimer's disease.

The neuroimaging equipment will enable the university to establish an image database for long-term monitoring of the anatomy of brains in laboratory animals. Dr. Darrell Mousseau, an associate professor of psychiatry and Saskatchewan research chair in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, is heading a research team that will use the neuroimaging equipment to identify changes in brain chemistry that may trigger the disease.

The Alzheimer Society and Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation are contributing $800,000 to the project.
