The Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee has recommended the use of MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) in women seeking treatment for uterine fibroids, according to a statement from the Focused Ultrasound Foundation.
MRgFUS was cited as a possible "cost-effective strategy" and a "safe and effective, noninvasive, uterine-preserving" treatment option, according to the foundation.
The recommendation stemmed from a new evidence review by Health Quality Ontario (HQO), which found that the method offers significant improvement in fibroid symptoms and rapid postprocedure recovery for women. It also is associated with a rare occurrence of complications and a low risk of patients requiring additional treatments, the foundation said.
