Toshiba America Medical Systems said that the University of California, Irvine (UCI) will use its Vantage Titan 3-tesla MR scanner to evaluate high-school football players for potential early indicators of brain trauma.
Specifically, the UCI researchers will investigate the use of noncontrast MRI to examine football players for cerebral microbleeds as a potential precursor to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), according to the vendor. The UCI team will enroll 100 football players as test subjects and 50 nonfootball players as control subjects.
Toshiba said it will also provide application training to the UCI researchers on the use of the MRI equipment.
