Portable MRI technology developer Hyperfine has formed a partnership with Madonna's charitable organization Raising Malawi.

Hyperfine and Raising Malawi will be highlighting research performed using the vendor's Swoop portable MRI device at the Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery & Intensive Care -- the country's only specialized pediatric hospital.

The company said that Michigan State University had acquired a Swoop system to facilitate research on cerebral malaria in partnership with Mercy James Centre. The research, which was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop new treatments for cerebral malaria and improve care, had been stalled for over a year after Mercy James Centre's previous MRI system broke down, according to Hyperfine.

After installation, however, Swoop has now been used by clinicians and researchers to scan more than 200 children, the vendor said.

In addition, Hyperfine founder Dr. Jonathan Rothberg will be personally donating $2 million to support the hospital's operations and build staff capacity.
