Dr. Rakesh Nathu, a radiation oncologist practicing in Las Vegas, has agreed to pay $5.7 million plus interest to settle allegations that he submitted false claims to federal health programs, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on June 30.
The DOJ alleged that Nathu submitted improper claims to Medicare, Tricare, and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan from 2007 through 2009. This included double billing for several procedures affiliated with radiation oncology treatment, as well as inappropriate billing for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatments.
Tony West, assistant attorney general for the DOJ's Civil Division, stated that the settlement was the result of a coordinated effort between the Civil Division, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada, and the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General.
