The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has awarded seven physicians a total of $675,000 to advance radiation oncology research.
These awards will fund studies in radiation and cancer biology, radiation physics, translational research, outcomes/health services research, and comparative effectiveness research within radiation oncology, according to the society.
Dr. Bryan Allen, PhD, of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and Dr. Stephen Shiao, PhD, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, are the two 2014 ASTRO Junior Faculty Career Research Training Award recipients. Both will receive $100,000 annually for two years in support of their research.
The 2014 ASTRO Residents/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Research Seed Grant was awarded to Dr. Zachary Morris, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics; Dr. Tu Dan of Thomas Jefferson University; and Dr. Todd Aguilera, PhD, of Stanford University Cancer Center. Each of the grant winners will receive $25,000 for one-year research projects, ASTRO said.
The 2014 ASTRO/Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) Comparative Effectiveness Research Award was given to Dr. Benjamin Smith, of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. James Murphy, of the University of California, San Diego. Smith and Murphy will each receive $50,000 annually for two years, according to the society.
