Radiation oncology and x-ray firm Varian Medical Systems has broken ground on new construction to expand its current Salt Lake City manufacturing facility.
The project will add 135,000 sq ft to the existing 341,000-sq-ft building, which serves as the headquarters for manufacturing Varian's x-ray products.
The additional space will accommodate Varian's flat-panel image detector and x-ray tube product lines, as well as clean rooms, R&D laboratories, expanded manufacturing space, and administrative offices.
The initiative is designed to consolidate operations now underway outside of Utah and ultimately create 1,000 new full-time jobs in the state over the next 20 years. Varian currently employs 860 people in Utah.
