Mitsubishi to install pencil-beam rad therapy

Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi Electric has signed an agreement to provide a pencil-beam scanning radiation therapy system to the SAGA Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Tosu, Japan.

Pencil-beam scanning technology uses a carbon ion beam with a greatly reduced spot size to irradiate complicated tumor volumes, enabling the delivery of individual layers of pencil-beam spots to precise locations. The system eliminates the need for beam collimation and compensators to adjust the target area, Mitsubishi said.

The system is scheduled to become operational in 2017.
