Mevion proton therapy center in NJ opens

Mevion Medical Systems said a proton therapy center in New Jersey with one of its systems has begun treating patients.

The Mevion S250 proton therapy system at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick, NJ, is now being used to treat patients, the company said. The first two patients treated at RWJUH were a young man with a spinal myxopapillary ependymoma and a patient with a recurrent brain tumor.

Mevion proton therapy systems are currently being installed at four additional sites in the U.S.: University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, scheduled to be delivered at the end of June; Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City; University of Florida Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health; and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, DC.
