Mevion delivers proton accelerator to Cleveland site

Proton therapy developer Mevion Medical Systems has delivered a superconducting synchrocyclotron accelerator for its Mevion S250 proton therapy system to a Cleveland hospital.

The accelerator will be installed in tandem with Mevion 250 at University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center and UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.

Following the installation of the accelerator, the system will undergo proton beam tuning and acceptance testing to verify that it meets technical and clinical requirements before being commissioned for clinical use.

The unit will be the first proton therapy system in Ohio used to treat adult and pediatric cancer patients, Mevion said. Clinical operation is expected to begin in the spring of 2016.
