Proton therapy developer Mevion Medical Systems has received an order for a second Mevion S250 proton therapy system from Ackerman Cancer Center in Jacksonville, FL.
The facility began treating cancer patients with its first Mevion S250 system in April, and it is treating enough patients to warrant the installation of a second system, Mevion said. The second system is a Mevion S250i with HyperScan pencil-beam scanning technology, which delivers intensity-modulated proton therapy by volumetrically scanning tumors in fewer than six seconds.
The facility's second proton therapy bunker will be built in 2016, and patient treatment is expected to begin in 2017.
