A technology investment firm received a patent this month on technology that it says is at the heart of ultrasound tissue harmonic imaging (THI).
Research Corporation Technologies (RCT) of Tucson, AZ, said it has been issued U.S. Patent No. 7,104,956, which the company said "broadly covers the fundamental components of (tissue harmonic imaging)." The patent covers work conducted in the 1990s by P. Ted Christopher, Ph.D., at the University of Rochester's Center for Biomedical Ultrasound in New York.
Christopher's research led to the development of second- and higher-order harmonic responses of tissue to an ultrasound beam that produces a sharper image than that of the fundamental frequency, the company said.
RCT manages the THI technology for the University of Rochester, and the company has already received patents 7,004,905 and 6,206,833. Two more patents are pending, the firm said.
RCT is offering nonexclusive licenses under the patents, and in 2002 granted a license to the Acuson unit of Siemens Medical Solutions of Malvern, PA.
