Acertara scores ultrasound patents

Ultrasound acoustic measurement and testing firm Acertara Acoustic Laboratories announced this week that it has received three patents for its technology.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the company U.S. Patent Nos. 8,159,900, 8,164,976, and 8,169,853 covering novel technology designed to validate the performance of diagnostic ultrasound systems. The patents were authored by John Timms, James Gessert, Matthew Fitzgibbons, and G. Wayne Moore.

The filing process for the patents began five years ago, when Acertara was part of Sonora Medical Systems, and the newly issued patents relate to evaluating the performance of an ultrasound system independent of the probe. The firm said that its R&D team has been awarded more than 30 U.S. patents, and it is currently developing additional new technologies for use in both diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, such as its recently released Artis system.
