Printing technology firm 3D Systems has launched Simbionix, a training module for transvaginal ultrasound.
Unlike external ultrasound exams, pelvic ultrasound poses more of a challenge to both learners and educators, the firm said. Simbionix provides a true-to-life training environment and was developed based on American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) standards and guidelines for the accreditation of ultrasound practices.
Training is performed on a mannequin combined with simulated anatomies and pathologies, 3D Systems said. Virtual patient cases include normal anatomical variations, ectopic pregnancy, fibroids, ovarian malignancies, and hydrosalpynx. Simbionix incorporates didactics, real-time guidance, and captured metrics for objective assessment.
The company also plans to add its Bespoke Modeling, a cloud-based service that allows medical professionals to create, view, share, and print full-color 3D anatomical models directly from DICOM data. When used with Simbionix, Bespoke Modeling allows medical professionals to view patient-specific 3D data, bookmark views, add annotations, explore specific anatomical structures, and order color 3D cloud-printed models or print onsite.
Simbionix is being demonstrated at the World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology this week in Barcelona, Spain.
