Week in Review: Reports from AIUM 2021 | COVID's effect on breast imaging | Virtual conference on AI

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Reports from the virtual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) were some of the most-read articles on AuntMinnie.com this past week.

One of our top articles covered promising new applications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound. Researchers from Ohio discussed their experience with ultrasound contrast in interventional applications and for investigating vascular malformations.

Meanwhile, a group from New York City described how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the number of ultrasound exams being performed by radiologists in the emergency department. The group found a dramatic drop in exams -- find out why.

A number of sessions at AIUM 2021 covered the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and researchers from Pennsylvania described how using POCUS to guide the placement of arterial lines had advantages over traditional guidance based on anatomical landmarks.

COVID-19's effect on breast imaging

AIUM 2021 wasn't the only meeting going on this past week. The Society of Breast Imaging/American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Symposium also took place, highlighting the latest research in women's imaging.

In one study, researchers from New York City and Los Angeles documented how the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic affected breast imaging. In all, 80% to 100% of breast imaging sites responding to a survey reported a reduction in volume.

Another study from the meeting raised the question of whether breast imaging specialists are working harder just to keep up. And a new study found that women of color still face barriers in breast cancer treatment.

You'll find our coverage of the conference in our Women's Imaging Community.
