New CPT code could open door for greater CAD adoption

LAS VEGAS - Computer aided detection (CAD) vendor R2 Technology has received a category 1 common procedural terminology (CPT) code for the use of its ImageChecker CAD system. The approval of a CPT code for ImageChecker, an FDA-approved CAD system for screening mammography, means that use of the product may be reimbursed by private insurers.

The new code is slated for use as an "add-on" because the product is used as a supplement to screening mammography. R2 believes the creation of the CPT code will facilitate supplemental reimbursement for CAD beyond what is already received for performing and interpreting a mammogram. The code, effective January 2002, will be included in the upcoming American Medical Association CPT 2002 codebook, slated for publication this November.

The company will soon launch a clinical reimbursement-specific portion of its Web site, at http://www.r2tech.com/, featuring a 24-hour turnaround to reimbursement questions posted online, according to Michael Longacre, R2’s director of managed care reimbursement.
