Report: Mammography market to reach $567 million by 2007

The world x-ray mammography market reached $282.5 million in revenues in 2000, according to a new report from market research firm Frost & Sullivan. Driven by sales of full-field digital systems, sales could hit $567 million by 2007, according to the San Jose, CA-based firm.

However, an inadequate reimbursement environment for mammography is a complicating factor that is holding back purchasing activity, according to the report. Most facilities in North America and Western Europe provide mammography services at a loss, said medical imaging analyst Antonio Garcia. With less money to spend, customers are likely to delay or cancel purchases.

In addition, consolidation remains an industry trend. Only six vendors manufacture and market mammography systems in North America in 2001, down from 12 in 1997. Frost attributes the consolidation to the high capital requirements for developing full-field digital mammography, coupled with limited demand for the machines.
