Louisiana has become the 24th state to enact a law requiring healthcare providers to give women information about their dense breast condition.
The Early Detection Act will go into effect on January 1, 2016.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Jack Montoucet on behalf of resident Monica Landry Helo, who was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer in 2013. Helo learned that the report of her mammography results contained information that affected her breast health in 2009, but that information was never shared with her.
She said she hopes the new law will help individuals discover cancer earlier due to the full disclosure of their condition.
