Breast imaging centers with higher use rates of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) have lower recall rates, University of Pennsylvania researchers have found.
Facilities that had converted to DBT had lower recall rates than those with both DBT and digital mammography or those with only digital mammography, according to Dr. Emily Conant and colleagues.
The research included 411,355 screening exams performed between 2015 and 2017 at 64 imaging facilities. The team found the following:
- Facilities with 75% to 100% DBT use had a recall rate of 8.8%.
- Facilities with 50% to 75% DBT use had a recall rate of 10.7%.
- Facilities with 25% to 50% DBT use had a recall rate of 11.4%.
- Facilities with 0% to 25% DBT use had a recall rate of 10.1%.
"These data demonstrate that DBT offers a more efficient screening option and increasing DBT utilization is associated with improved outcome," Conant's group concluded.
