AuntMinnie.com Advanced Visualization Insider

Dear Advanced Visualization Insider,

Intraoperative image review within the sterile field can be a challenge for interventional radiologists. A team from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center is exploring new methods and devices for easing this process.

The group asked 29 radiologists to simulate a set of standardized image manipulation tasks using three different devices: Microsoft's Kinect motion-sensing technology, Apple's iPad, and the Hillcrest Labs Loop Pointer gyroscopic mouse. All three showed promise for intraoperative image review, although each had its pros and cons.

Fourth-year resident Dr. Cherng Chao presented the results at RSNA 2012, and our coverage of the research is the subject of this newsletter's Insider Exclusive. You can access the article before our other members by clicking here.

The new iPad's increased resolution raised expectations that the tablet could be more efficacious for reviewing radiographs. In other news from RSNA 2012, a team from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) put the iPad to the test on chest radiographs performed to rule out pneumothorax. How did the iPad and MGH's in-house image viewer fare? Click here to find out.

Stay tuned for more coverage in your Advanced Visualization Digital Community from the RSNA 2012 meeting in the coming weeks.

A large prospective trial has revealed that computer-aided detection (CAD) software can significantly improve the performance of experienced readers in detecting intermediate-size polyps on CT colonography studies. These gains, which were achieved without a decrease in specificity, only required a minute or two of extra reading time. Click here for the details.

Chinese researchers also recently discussed how their new lung parenchyma segmentation method may pave the way for improved performance of lung CAD software.

In addition, a Dutch group concluded that radiologists do better when they use CAD when they need it, not while they are reading a study. Why was CAD more effective when it was used on-demand? Click here to find out.
