Brachytherapy is an essential treatment for cervical cancer, but it requires precise delivery of a high dose of radiation to the tumor while leaving surrounding tissue untouched. That's a challenging task, but 3D volumetric MR images can be invaluable for treatment planning, according to researchers from St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
These images, reconstructed from an isotropic 3D T2-weighted sequence, offer a host of brachytherapy planning advantages, including excellent multiplanar tumor visualization, quantitative tumor burden assessment, and accurate analysis of temporal response, according to Dr. Olga Kalinkin, PhD.
