Farmers sues over imaging services billed but not rendered

Farmers Insurance and several affiliates have filed suit in California against two unnamed radiological corporations that the company says billed for services that were never delivered.

The December 19 suit in the Superior Court of California charges the corporations with billing for 3D renderings in MRI and CT exams that they failed to perform in more than 200 cases representing bodily injury and workers' compensation claims filed under policies issued to Farmers policyholders.

The civil complaint seeks restitution and additional remedies for violations of California's Unfair Business Practices Act and the Insurance Frauds Prevention Act, and requests an order directing the defendants to stop engaging in the improper billing practices, Farmers said.

Entities representing the plaintiff include Farmers Insurance Exchange, 21st Century Insurance Company, Coast National Insurance Company, Mid-Century Insurance Company, and Truck Insurance Exchange.

The company is taking aggressive action to protect its policyholders and stop fraud, Farmers said.
