Nico and Synaptive sign 3D brain surgery deal

Interventional medical device developer Nico and 3D visualization firm Synaptive Medical have signed an agreement to combine their technologies to develop an integrated system for neurosurgery.

The deal will combine Nico's BrainPath interventional access technology with Synaptive's BrightMatter 3D visualization and planning software. Nico will act as a U.S. sales agent for Toronto-based Synaptive, taking advantage of Nico's team of 20 field sales representatives and 200 neurosurgeons who have been trained on BrainPath.

The BrightMatter Plan offers visualization of 3D tractography in the brain, allowing the neurosurgeon to establish a minimally disruptive surgical path to the abnormality. BrainPath enables intraoperative atraumatic access to the abnormality along the preplanned surgical path and minimizes the potential impact to critical structures by displacing tissues of the brain during advancement to the abnormality. This all happens through an opening smaller than a dime.
