Dear Advanced Visualization Insider,

CT perfusion is ideal for gauging response to today's antiangiogenic lung cancer therapies, but the scans require long breathholds that lung cancer patients have difficulty with, resulting in motion artifacts. In a presentation at RSNA 2015, investigators from California and Pennsylvania described the steps they are taking to subdue such artifacts.

The group has developed a technique that registers tumor images to depict blood flow accurately. Find out how they did it in this issue's Insider Exclusive.

In another study presented at RSNA 2015, automated coronary calcium scoring was used to assess coronary calcium in ungated CT lung cancer screening scans. The project addresses a real clinical need, considering that more lung cancer patients succumb to heart disease than lung cancer. Find out how it works by clicking here.

Meanwhile, 3D printing is a tactile and intuitive form of advanced visualization that is being used in an ever-broader array of applications. Researchers from Texas used the technology to achieve what they called one of the most complex separations ever attempted for conjoined twins. Learn more about the one-of-a-kind procedure, which was described at the RSNA conference.

Down in Arizona, researchers from two leading children's hospitals are creating a library of 3D hearts with the aim of matching heart donors to recipients more closely. Click here to learn how the system works and about plans for future research.

Pigeons, it turns out, can not only learn how to distinguish benign from malignant breast pathology, they can learn and apply new kinds of images rapidly, according to a study of radiologists' feathered friends. Interestingly, their discrimination skills took a tumble when color was removed from the images. Are there lessons for fans of advanced visualization in this story?

Considering the wealth of new applications for 3D printing of CT and MR images, is it time for your facility to establish a 3D printing service? Before you order up a system, think hard about what you want to get out of it, according to an article you'll find here.
