Madabhushi receives radiology, pathology fusion patent

Anant Madabhushi, PhD, of Case Western Reserve University has been awarded a U.S. patent for technology designed to characterize disease by fusing radiology and pathology data.

Specifically, U.S. patent No. 9,767,555 provides methods and apparatus associated with distinguishing invasive adenocarcinoma from in situ adenocarcinoma, the university said. The technology involves generating an invasiveness score for a region of tissue on 3D radiological images; the extent of the disease is then spatially mapped on the 3D radiological images by combining a set of 3D histological reconstructions with the radiology images.

Mirabela Rusu, a former postdoctoral fellow of Madabhushi's and currently a research scientist at GE Global Research, is a co-inventor on the patent. Madabhushi is the F. Alex Nason professor II of biomedical engineering and director of the university's Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics.
