Calif. hospital acquires virtual reality platform

University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland has partnered with Surgical Theater to make the company's virtual reality (VR) visualization platform available for use in the hospital's neurosurgery department.

The Precision VR platform can convert conventional CT and MR images into 3D models that users can see in 360° when wearing a headset.

Neurosurgeons will be able to use the platform to digitally customize treatment plans for patients, as well as to intraoperatively visualize patients' neurologic conditions and navigate complex procedures, according to the company. In addition, patients may use the technology to see inside their own anatomy before making medical decisions.
