3D bioprinting firm Aether has developed 3D printing software that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to segment medical images of organs as well as automatically reconstruct them as digital 3D models.

Aether's Automatic Segmentation and Reconstruction (ASAR) software is based on a combination of deep-learning models and image-processing techniques. The automated segmentation application allows users to process CT scans without additional editing tools or calibration -- reducing the image-processing time for 3D printing from several hours to less than a minute, according to Aether.

The company is also collaborating with Hae Lin Jang, PhD, at Harvard Medical School to develop a completely integrated organ printing platform -- uniting Aether's multitool bioprinter and bioinks with AI -- to 3D print multimaterial organ models.

Together, Aether and Jang's team at Harvard plan to continue training the software's deep-learning models and investigate the 3D printing of organs using real human cells, the company said.
