Johns Hopkins University will use software from medical image analysis software developer 4DMedical in a clinical trial of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

4D's XV-LVAS software uses existing hospital cinefluoroscopy images to provide images of the lungs of patients with COPD. Patient recruitment has started, and the first scanning should start in the coming weeks. Results are expected to be published later in 2021.

The software offers insight into progressive lung diseases through a ventilation report, a color-coded visualization that shows coronal and axial slices, and 4D animation. Additionally, the report quantifies ventilation heterogeneity, which is an indicator of lung health.
