The first total hip arthroplasty using the HipInsight augmented reality (AR) from Surgical Planning Associates was performed on February 4 at North Atlantic Surgery Suites in New Hampshire.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Stephen B. Murphy, founder of Surgical Planning Associates. The company notes that HipInsight received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on January 28.
HipInsight, which is contained completely within Microsoft's HoloLens 2 head-mounted device, projects holograms on AR glasses, allowing them to "see" inside the bodies of patients. The company believes that HipInsight is an improvement over traditional surgical navigation systems, as well as robotic intraoperative imaging systems, which display information on flat screens outside the surgeon's view of the patient.
