The growing role of advanced visualization technology in radiology was on full display at this month's Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) annual meeting in Providence, RI.
In scientific sessions as well as SIIM U talks, presentations on 3D, CAD, and image processing brought attendees up to speed on how to best utilize these tools in their practices.
For example, a multi-institutional research team found significant variation among different automated analysis tools in measuring the maximum diameter of pulmonary nodules, owing to their different calculation approaches. Therefore, unless standardized, maximum dimension is an unreliable marker of tumor size, even when using automated analysis tools, according to presenter Dr. Woojin Kim of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
