Google Health is partnering with the Mayo Clinic to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can support physicians, help reduce treatment planning time, and improve the efficiency of radiotherapy.
The two are working on an algorithm to assist clinicians in contouring healthy tissue and organs from tumors and are conducting research to better understand how AI could be used effectively in clinical practice. Head and neck cancers will be a focus because these tumors are particularly challenging areas to contour, given the many delicate structures that sit close together, Google said.
In the first phase of research with Mayo Clinic, Google plans to create and validate a model using deidentified data as well as study how an AI system can be used in practice.
