An effort to decrease costs is driving the adoption of speech recognition (SR) technology across the European healthcare enterprise, according to a report by healthcare analysts Frost & Sullivan.
Potential applications include transcription, patient monitoring, interactive response systems, and telemedicine, as well as electronic health record (EHR) generation, maintenance, and security, the firm said.
The cost of digitizing dictation utilizing outside transcription services can average between $10,000 and $30,000 per year; the application of SR technology to replace transcription can lead to savings of more than $10,000 a year, the analysts said. In addition, reports from SR adopters indicate a decrease in report turnaround time.
Customer acceptance of the technology is the major hurdle SR vendors must overcome. Vendors will need to demonstrate improvements in terms of successful projects where voice recognition software has delivered as promised, F & S said.
