Computer workstation firm Sun Microsystems of Santa Clara, CA, has been chosen by the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) at the University of California, Los Angeles, to provide a high-performance computing (HPC) grid to assist its brain research, Sun said.
The facility will utilize a system based on Sun's Solaris 10 operating system, Sun N1 Grid Engine, 306 Sun Fire x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers, and Sun StorEdge L8500. The HPC grid will support scientists worldwide as they combine information from more than 10,000 images, leveraging LONI's series of algorithms and mathematical computations to study brain development, Alzheimer's disease, drug treatments for conditions such as schizophrenia, and the effect of AIDS on the brain, according to Sun.
