Dr. David Brailer, head of the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, has tendered his resignation, effective May 19.
According to HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, Brailer has agreed to serve as vice chair of the American Health Information Community, which is charged with making recommendations to the Secretary of HHS to facilitate the development and adoption of standards-based health IT.
He will also continue to serve as a consultant to HHS to help lead President Bush's healthcare transparency initiative, Leavitt said.
Until a replacement the position is announced, the work of the Office of the National Coordinator will continue under the leadership of the four permanent directors of the office, according to Leavitt.
