Despite continuing its recent streak of strong revenue growth, healthcare IT and advanced visualization developer Merge Healthcare posted a loss in its fourth quarter.
For the period (end-December 31), the vendor had $64.1 million in revenue, up 39% from the $46.2 million recorded in the same period last year. However, Merge had a net loss of $1.3 million, compared with net income of $8.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 (which included a one-time noncash tax benefit of $14.1 million).
In a statement, CEO Jeff Surges said the company's fourth-quarter and 2011 results illustrate the planned progress the company set out to achieve, as well as a trend of increasing revenue quarter over quarter throughout the year.
For the year, Merge had revenues of $232.8 million, up from $140.3 million a year ago. The company had a 2011 net loss of $5.5 million, compared with a net loss of $11.5 million in 2010.
