Agfa closes Heartlab deal, buys remaining shares of Med2Rad

Agfa HealthCare said it has concluded its purchase of cardiac image and information management firm Heartlab for $132.5 million. Agfa and Heartlab of Westerly, RI, have been collaborating since December 2003 under a distribution agreement for Agfa's Impax for Cardiology network.

Mortsel, Belgium-based Agfa has also acquired the remaining shares of RIS developer Med2Rad of Macerata, Italy, for $4 million in cash. Agfa and Med2Rad have been working together since 2000, when Agfa became the exclusive distributor of Med2Rad's RIS offering. In 2002, Agfa acquired a 30% ownership in the company.

Both deals are part of Agfa's strategy to strengthen its position in the radiology IT market, according to the firm.
