Storage firm EMC of Hopkinton, MA, has launched an upgrade to its flagship Centera product line, with new features that give users the ability to put information into "virtual pools" of data.
The upgrade is part of a new version 3.0 of Centera's CentraStar operating system. The virtual-pool concept enables users to divide a single Centera content-addressed storage (CAS) archive into discrete areas based on the type of data that's being stored. This gives users more flexibility in managing the data, according to the company.
For example, an institution might want to handle data from the hospital information system differently from how it manages PACS images, while e-mail data might be another animal entirely in terms of backup and security protocols.
The new release also includes new features for backing up data, the company said. Previously, Centera could only replicate data in a bidirectional mode with another site. Now, Centera users can replicate data in a star configuration, in which multiple application servers replicate data to a central archive, or a chain configuration, in which multiple archives connected in a daisy-chain fashion can back up data to the other servers.
EMC has also released new add-on software products concurrent with the CentraStar 3.0 release. Centera Universal Access Version 3.5 enables users to install fewer versions of Centera Universal Access and continuously synchronizes file-system content with Centera. Centera FileArchiver 1.0 lets users plug file archives into EMC's Celerra network-attached storage product, while EMC's Centera Seek and Chargeback Reporter applications have also been upgraded.
