Ed Heere, president and CEO of RIS/PACS vendor CoActiv Medical, died on May 16 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 68.
A longtime veteran of the PACS industry, Heere founded CoActiv in 2003, and the company made its debut at that year's RSNA conference with its Exam-PACS product, which took a modular approach to offering DICOM-compliant PACS software.
CoActiv continued to develop products based on the Exam-PACS platform over the years, releasing the Exam-RIS and Exam-Vault cloud-based archiving offerings. CoActiv was one of the first companies to offer open-standards Web-based PACS, as well as cloud-based offsite archiving, to provide anytime, anywhere image viewing.
More recently, CoActiv was one of the first firms to enable image communication on mobile devices, according to the company.
Heere had removed himself from the management of CoActiv's day-to-day operations, and many of his responsibilities as president and CEO of CoActiv have been taken over by general manager Frank Baker, who will maintain this leadership role at the company.
