Dear Business & Industry Insider,
Medical imaging has so far remained free of the scandals and controversies that have affected pharmaceutical companies regarding their sales and marketing practices. But that doesn't mean that U.S. regulators won't be shining a light on radiology in the near future.
In a bid to stave off such scrutiny, the main industry trade group representing medical imaging vendors has implemented a new code of ethics designed to set standards for ethical behavior among companies. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published the code in January, and vendors have been educating their personnel about its provisions since then.
The code has some obvious proscriptions: vendors must refrain from offering potential customers any "unlawful inducement" to buy their products. But the devil is in the details, and some junkets that were once de rigueur are now verboten. Some companies are even logging complaints from customers who had enjoyed their past largesse.
