GE to buy healthcare IT firm IDX

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Multimodality vendor GE Healthcare surprised the medical imaging world today by announcing a $1.2 billion bid to buy healthcare information technology firm IDX Systems, according to an article by staff writer Erik L. Ridley that we're featuring in our PACS Digital Community.

The deal will dramatically boost GE's position in the rapidly growing market for healthcare IT. The company has a strong position in PACS and in niche information systems segments, but has lacked its own offering in the hospital information system (HIS) market.

With the acquisition, GE will become an even more formidable competitor to its multimodality brethren. The IDX deal will probably pay dividends down the road as medical imaging becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare IT networks.
