An amendment to the Senate's 2014 budget proposal that supports repealing the medical device tax has passed the body with 79 votes, according to a statement from the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA).
The 2.3% tax on medical device makers is part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Opponents of the tax say it will hinder innovation and could lead to U.S. device makers relocating overseas.
Bipartisan majorities in Congress have now voted to repeal the tax, according to Stephen Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), another industry group that opposes the tax.
MITA, along with other supporters of repeal in the Senate and the medical industry, applauded passage of the amendment.
