Canadian exam rereads find 10% discrepancy rate

Canadian healthcare network Northern Health announced that a review of radiology exams taken at a hospital in British Columbia is now complete.

Discrepancies in 8,400 images read by one radiologist at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace between October 2016 and January 2017 prompted the review, which was conducted by a group of radiologists at Vancouver General Hospital.

Of the total reviewed exams, 10.3% resulted in a different interpretation that was clinically significant, Northern Health said. While these differences had the potential to alter follow-up or treatment, patients were not necessarily adversely affected, the network noted.

The radiologist who originally read the exams, Dr. Claude Vezina, remains on voluntary leave, according to Northern Health.
