Low-cost MRI operator Smart Choice MRI has closed its doors. Outpatient imaging provider the Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) has acquired four Smart Choice MRI centers in Wisconsin, and the remaining Smart Choice MRI centers have been closed.

Smart Choice MRI locations in Appleton, De Pere, Kenosha, and La Crosse will be added to CDI's existing Wisconsin network of outpatient imaging centers. The centers in Appleton and De Pere are operating as normal and scheduling patients as part of the CDI network; the Kenosha center will close temporarily but will reopen as part of the Froedtert CDI network of centers in Milwaukee, while the La Crosse center will open in the future, according to CDI.

Smart Choice MRI, which launched in 2015 to provide customers with MRI exams priced at $600 or less, has closed its remaining locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. CDI said that patients seeking care at Smart Choice MRI locations are being offered appointments at nearby CDI centers.

"It's important to make sure patients continue to get the answers they need," said CDI President and CEO Rick Long in a statement. "CDI is well established in these markets, the referring communities know us well and we've stepped up to make sure patients get seen right away."
