Adjustment of CT scan settings offers clearer view of stroke

The ability to highlight the contrast between normal and edematous tissue in ischemic brain parenchyma is the main benefit of a soft-copy review of a nonenhanced computed tomography scan, according to researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The keys are the variable window width, which increases the visibility of the hypoattenuating ischemic regions, and the center level settings, which improved sensitivity and specificity for stroke detection.

A soft-copy visual review at a PACS workstation did not increase scan reading time.
